New book planned to remember Culdaff priest Fr Paddy O'Kane

Many people around Inishowen will remember Fr Paddy O'Kane, not only for his years as a priest but also for his humour, his personality and the time he gave to others.

Born in Culdaff in 1948, Fr Paddy was ordained in 1973 and spent much of his ministry working with communities in Derry and the surrounding areas.

He also served as parish priest in Moville from 2007 until 2009.

Fr Paddy was known for doing things his own way. He enjoyed music, entertaining people and wasn't afraid to speak openly about difficult subjects, including his own experiences with depression.

He passed away in March 2022, but many people still remember him with great affection.

Now journalist Ciaran O'Neill is putting together a book about Fr Paddy's life, bringing together some of his newspaper writings with personal memories and stories from people who knew him.

The book is planned for publication next year.

Ciaran would particularly welcome contributions from anyone who has a memory of Fr Paddy.

Perhaps he visited your home, helped your family through a difficult time, celebrated a special occasion or simply made you laugh.

Sometimes it's those small personal memories that tell us the most about a person.

If you knew Fr Paddy in Culdaff, Moville or elsewhere, this is an opportunity to help ensure those memories are preserved.

Anyone wishing to contribute a story can contact Ciaran O'Neill directly.
