Inishowen Bogwood Sculptures

Timeless Art from Ancient Irish Bogwood

Welcome to Inishowen Bogwood Sculptures, located in the heart of Bocan, Inishowen, County Donegal, an area rich in Irish legend and history. Just along the road from our gallery, you'll find the famous Bocan Standing Stones, connecting our landscape to ancient times. It is from this very bogland that Mary Doherty sources her extraordinary materials: Bog Oak and Bog Deal, carbon-dated to be over 6,000 years old.

The Story Behind Inishowen Bogwood Sculptures

Mary Doherty’s journey as a bogwood sculptor began in 1993 when she attended a bogwood sculpture course at Esker Redemptorist Monastery in Athenry. Upon returning home to Inishowen, Mary started creating sculptures in her kitchen, before moving into a dedicated workshop.

Encouraged by friends, she exhibited her first pieces at a local craft fair, leading to invitations to showcase her work in Derry, Dublin, Galway, Boston, New Jersey, and beyond. As her passion turned into a thriving business, her husband, Sean, built her a beautiful gallery beside their home, where visitors can experience her artwork up close.
